The Leadership Habits that build trust (Part 2)

Published
August 26, 2026

In Part 1, we looked at 4 habits; here are 3 more.

Habit 5: Addressing Difficult Conversations Early Avoiding uncomfortable conversations rarely solves problems. It usually magnifies them. Whether it is underperformance, conflict between colleagues, or inappropriate workplace behaviour, leaders build trust by addressing issues respectfully and promptly. Employees notice when poor behaviour is ignored. Silence communicates approval. Trust grows when people know their leaders will confront problems fairly, consistently, and with dignity.

Habit 6: Leading with Integrity Integrity is often described as doing the right thing when no one is watching. Leadership requires something even more demanding. Doing the right thing when everyone is watching. Employees pay close attention to whether leaders practise what they preach. Do they follow the same policies expected of everyone else? Do they admit mistakes? Do they accept accountability? Nothing builds credibility faster than a leader willing to say, "I got that wrong." Far from diminishing authority, humility strengthens it.

Habit 7: Investing in People Employees rarely forget leaders who invested in their growth. Sometimes that investment is formal training. Sometimes it is mentoring. Sometimes it is simply taking the time to ask, "How are you progressing?" "What support do you need?" "What would help you succeed?" When leaders show genuine interest in helping people develop, employees feel valued beyond the work they produce. And people who feel valued are more likely to remain committed.

At People Pact, we believe that healthy workplace cultures are not built by policies alone. They are built by leaders. Leaders who communicate clearly. Leaders who lead consistently. Leaders who listen intentionally. Leaders who act with integrity.

Employees don't simply remember what leaders achieved. They remember how those leaders made them feel. And long after KPIs have been met, projects completed, and strategies revised, trust remains the foundation upon which every high-performing team is built.

As a leader, "Have you led in a way that makes people trust you?"
